The History of Seats
Man's early utilization of seats were both for function and ceremonial. Three styles of different seats developed in ancient history, the stool (both fixed and folding), the bench and the chair. The Egyptians around 3,000 B.C. used the stool as the most common seat for a variety of purposes. For Royalty, during the Second Dynasty the stool evolved with a low backrest and was higher than the former stool. To accommodate various heights of individuals, cushions or foot stools were added. Chair design and style along with usability were important in the ancient world. By the Middle ages seats were changing into the forms that we are familiar with today. Cushions and fabrics were added for comfort.
Advances in Seats
Design in seats moved away from the heavy and harsh rectangular forms to lighter design incorporting flowing curves and a backrest intended to
assist in correct posture. A support for the body that would allow for highly relaxed posture was created in ergonomic design. Posture and the chair have become one and this concept has become an important part of seat manufacturing in the modern world. Notice the ergonomic support as shown in the Ultima auditorium seat. The seat back is convex and concave supporting the shoulders and the back. The seat pan is also curved giving support to the tailbone and lower back.
Seating materials have also evolved during the course of history. In the beginning, most seats were made of wood. Steel and cast iron were integrated into seat design during the last few centuries. New materials and manufacturing processes have allowed new designs which allow affordable comfortable seating for the masses.
